What is Digestive Health?
The digestive system is responsible for the breakdown and absorption of nutrients from food and liquids. The nutrients are a source of energy and are responsible for repairing cells. This system contains a vast network of nerves connected to the brain that sends signals to the area.
The digestive system starts at the mouth. Food and liquid pass down the food pipe called the esophagus, which uses organized contractions to move the contents down to the stomach. The stomach secretes acids and enzymes that break down food. The contents are then passed into the small intestine, where the food is broken down further, absorbed, and sent to the bloodstream. The result is a brown liquid that moves into the large intestine, also called the colon. Water is absorbed to bulk the stool before it reaches the end of the system and is eliminated through the anus.

When this system is disrupted, it can occur at any point and can have a wide range of symptoms. This makes understanding digestive conditions tricky, and it is important to work with your health care provider to understand your symptoms.
